Applying the concept of collaborative innovation is becoming key to technological and commercial success in the twenty-first century. But before the concept can be put into practice, companies first must have a clear understanding of technology trends and their likely commercialization. This understanding will help answer questions such as: Where are there new, emerging opportunities for us? What businesses might we -- and might we not -- want to be in? How are disruptions in the marketplace going to affect our businesses and those of our customers? And where do we need to collaborate? To encourage discussion of these issues, IBM sponsored a recent gathering of Chief Technology Officers from 30 companies to explore new concepts of innovation. In this third program in a series, Paul Horn, IBM Vice President and Director of Research, offers a global technology outlook, explaining how technology trends can be tapped to enhance innovation and business success. Horn notes that collaborative innovation is all about how you can accelerate the R&D process to create new innovations in the marketplace by working with your customers and partners in various alliances. He points out that innovation requires not only building what’s new, but also having a channel for the rapid flow of ideas or inventions into the marketplace. Doing so, Horn asserts, allows companies to “set our technical agenda so that we can build the technologies that our collaborators and partners tell us are important, not the technologies that our underlying researchers think are important.” He also identified several trends changing the information technology landscape that will have major impact on business. The program concludes with a Q&A session moderated by Navi Radjou of Forrester Research.
